Bridget swore as she struggled, and failed again, to zip up the dress she was trying on. She had always managed to fit perfectly well into a size sixteen in the past, so why not now? It was impossible that she could have gone up a whole dress size, especially while she’d been watching the calories so closely in the run-up to Ben and Tamsin’s wedding. And why did clothing designers always assume that generously proportioned women must also be taller than average? Even if she could have squeezed into this dress she’d have been constantly tripping over the hem. Was there nothing in the whole of Oxford for a woman of her size but under five foot three? She’d lost count of the number of dresses she had tried on that morning and was rapidly closing in on despair. Finally, she abandoned her efforts and pulled the dress off, tugging it over her hips and letting the slinky fabric pool around her ankles.

‘How’s it going in there?’ On the other side of the changing room curtain, the shop assistant remained hopeful despite the increasingly obvious futility of her task. She was a real trier, and Bridget was grateful that one of them still seemed to believe that the perfect dress was out there somewhere. ‘Can I fetch you anything else?’

‘Perhaps something a little more…’ began the assistant, but even she now seemed to be out of ideas.

‘I think I’ll leave it for now,’ said Bridget. There’s still a week to go before the wedding.’

She left the shop empty-handed with a growing feeling of impending doom. It was her own fault, of course. Chloe had been pestering her for weeks about her dress, and yet she’d left it until the last minute.

‘I’m far too busy at work,’ Bridget had told her whenever questioned. But they both knew that wasn’t the real reason. She had simply wanted to pretend that the wedding wasn’t happening. Now her plan appeared to have backfired catastrophically. She would arrive at the event wearing… what? She had no idea. Humiliation was guaranteed.

Jonathan had told her not to worry, that it wasn’t the least bit important. But what did men know? Weddings were easy for them – they simply had to get their suits dry-cleaned and polish their shoes.

Oh, my God, shoes!

That was the other thing – accessories. It wasn’t sufficient just to buy a dress, assuming she could ever find one that wasn’t too tight, too long or too low-cut. She needed all the right accessories to
